Three Upcoming Summer Programs Sponsored by the Vernon County Unit on Aging

By Mackenzie James from Vernon County Unit on Aging

Although the winter has been long, summer has finally arrived! Along with sunshine and warm temperatures, the Vernon County Unit of Aging is offering a variety of programs and projects targeted to those sixty and over to participate in (others are welcome to participate, too).
Project One: Beginning in June, we will be offering a walking program called the SHAPE Walking Club (Staying Healthy and Physically Energized). SHAPE will encourage healthy activities and will meet twice a week for six weeks. Community walking clubs will be formed throughout the county for groups of five or more.  All are encouraged to join, even if you don’t consider yourself a “professional” walker. Call (608)-637-5201 to sign up before June 7th.

Project Two: Watch for Cooking for One or Two Presentations will be offered through the Unit on Aging Senior Dining Centers. The program will offer tips and recipes for health cooking on a budget for one or two—which can be a sizeable challenge for anyone! Each participant will receive a cook book with all the tasty recipes featured and will contain easy and cheap recipes for all diet types.

Project Three: Our third project is creating a calendar celebrating the lives of Vernon County residents 90 years old and over. We are looking for twelve Vernon County residents (age 90 and over) to interview and highlight one each month on the calendar including their photo and life story. This calendar will share ways these seniors have “added life to their years” and also describe the services available from the Vernon County Aging Unit. If you are interested or know someone who would be interested in participating, please call (608)-637-5201.

We look forward to seeing everyone participating in these events and have a great summer! Call the Vernon County Aging Unit at  (608) 637-5201 or visit our website at www.vernonseniors.org for more information.
